Common Sliding Glass Door Problems

Updated: Jun 16, 2021

Sliding doors are amazing. They maximize floor space, let in plenty of ventilation and natural light, and cover larger openings for wonderful panoramic views. But sometimes sliding doors get stuck and won’t slide.

Why do sliding doors get stuck? The most common reason is accumulated dirt and debris in the sliding door track and rollers. Normal wear and tear can also cause misalignment and a stuck door. Sometimes, accidents and use of excessive force can break the glass, frame and small parts. Is your sliding door stuck? Here are common sliding door problems and what to check.

Sliding Door Stuck: Common Sliding Glass Door Problems

Common Sliding Door Problems and Fixes

Dirt and debris. Check the track and the grooves of your sliding door for dirt and debris. If it’s been a while since the door was installed, it’s normal to see debris, sand, hair and fur especially if you have pets. Dirt and grime can clog the rollers underneath the door and keep the door from sliding smoothly.

What to check: The door needs to be removed from the track, and then the rollers cleaned and oiled. The rollers should also be checked for damage.

Faulty rollers. Rollers make sliding doors glide smoothly on the track. Worn out or broken rollers can cause the door to become stuck. They can also damage the track.

What to check: The rollers should be checked for dirt and damage. After cleaning and oiling, the rollers are replaced and re-aligned with the track. Get new rollers to replace those that are severely damaged.

Damaged door or door parts. Using too much force on a sliding door can make the screws at the top and bottom pop out and damage the glass, the sliding door mechanism and other door parts.

What to check: Check the track, screws and rollers at the top and bottom for damage. If damaged, they should be replaced.

Broken latch. A broken latch keeps the door from closing or locking in place, creating a safety hazard for the inhabitants.

What to check: If the door keeps jamming or locking, the latch may need to be replaced.

Rusty track. Normal wear and tear, water damage and living near the ocean can all cause rusting on metal tracks and parts. Rust causes friction and prevents sliding doors from opening and closing smoothly.

What to check: Patches of rust should be scraped off and the area thoroughly cleaned.

Sliding Door Problems: Tips & Tricks

Regular maintenance is key to keeping your sliding doors functional for many years. Some tips and tricks:

  • Keep the tracks clean and free of dirt, mud and debris. You can use a small brush to remove stubborn patches of grime and vacuum loose debris. Wipe down the track and door parts after vacuuming with an alcohol-based cleaner.

  • Lubricate the tracks and mechanical parts after cleaning for a smooth sliding door operation. Use silicone spray that repels dirt and wax for areas that experience heavy wear and tear, like the bottom track, screws and rollers.

  • Make sure the locking mechanism and handles function as they should. Clean and oil parts as needed.

  • Don’t forget to check small parts like rollers and screws occasionally to make sure they are clean, properly aligned and undamaged.
